Wild Wood

Apparently getting to NH early to get a campsite is getting there by one. I didn't get up until ten, we left by twelve-thirty, and arrived at all the full campsites by five. One of the hosts said to try Wildwood though, 16 miles away. So we drove away from the K. Highway, through town, back into the White Mountain National Forest, across the AT (made us sad to see the trail again), and to Wildwood where we grabbed the last available campsite. It was 6 pm. Wow the campsites fill up fast on Summer weekends.

Let me share with you a gas saving tip when driving a manual transmission in the mountains. One word: neutral. Shift into neutral when going down hills and coast away! You will use very little gas and it is fun to see how far you can go before needing to get into gear again. Call me crazy but it does amuse me. You can do it in an automatic as well, but I take no responsibility for what happens. Those automatic transmissions have a mind of their own. It should work though. You know when you hear on the news that people crashed because they said their brakes wouldn't work and the gas pedal was stuck? I think most of the time people are pushing the gas pedal and thinking it is the brake out of panic or stupidity or whatever. But if you get into that situation, shift into neutral. The engine may continue to rev until something bad happens but it will not be spinning the wheels and you can brake or at least wait until friction and other forces of nature slow you down.
